"Friends"

“Friends" Groot (character created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, owned by Marvel Comics) and Rocket Racoon (character created by Bill Mantlo and Kieth Giffen, owned by Marvel Comics) is a glass on glass mosaic consisting entirely of stained glass.  The piece measures 37in x 31in framed.  All pieces have been cut and placed entirely by hand on 1/4in double strength glass. This piece can be lit from behind to give it a stained glass window look. Two different grout colors are used as well as painting grout technique in the raccoon portion.

"Friends" is a nod to the relationship that Groot and Rocket portrayed in the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1 movie (written and directed by James Gunn for Marvel Studios).  The first Groot appeared in the comics as an invader that intended to capture humans for experimentation. A different Groot is represented in the film.  Although initially simply described as Rocket's hired muscle, this Groot shows a softer side and an extreme devotion to his Guardian family.  Rocket Raccoon comes from the planet Halfworld where animals were genetically manipulated to grant them human level intelligence.  Th two have a bond that goes far beyond co-workers.  Groot and Rocket's love for each other is evident in Groots willingness to lay down his life for his friends and in Rockets heartfelt sadness in the seeming death of Groot.

We all yearn for a relationship like Groot and Rockets. Something that transcends friendship. We all want to be able to say, "We are Groot."
