"Issue #1," Human Torch (character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, owned by Marvel Comics) is a glass on glass mosaic, inspired by Marvel Knights Fantastic Four #1 cover art by Steve McNiven. The Torch consists entirely of stained glass. The piece measures 27.5 x 29.5 inches in a shadow box frame. All pieces have been cut and placed entirely by hand on 1/4 in. glass. This piece has “twinkle” light placed in the shadow box to give the illusion that the Human Torch is on fire. It is grouted with red sanded grout.
Go to google and it will tell you all about Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. I want to take just a moment to let you in on something. This is my first ever mosaic creation. I always wanted to be a comic book artist, but alas, I cannot draw. I am also color blind and have a genetic eye disease that could eventually lead to blindness, so I got that going against me. On our anniversary, my wife and I visited a stained glass museum at the Navy Pier in Chicago and I had an epiphany. I could do stained glass mosaics of comics. No one I knew did it. If no one did it, who would you compare them to. You couldn't say it was bad, but also couldn't say it was good.
Upon returning home, my wife purchased a box of records at a yard sale (against my wishes). We were able to raise enough money, by selling the albums on ebay, to purchase the tools and glass to make “The Human Torch.” The rest is history. I believe that God does not give you a talent and a passion to be set idly aside which is my Mosaic Fan Art was created. It was created to utilize stained glass mosaics of comic book heroes and villains to let Fandom know that a broken life can be pieced together to become a masterpiece with a relationship with a loving God. We are all broken; either because of our bad decisions or someone else's, either because of physical, emotional, financial, or relational problems. The list is long.
You are a work of art created by an amazing Artist. The same artist can restore your life into an amazing masterpiece.
